GIF Loop Generator

Control how a GIF repeats. Make it loop forever, play just once, or play an exact number of times – changed directly in the file’s loop setting without re-encoding, so the images stay identical. For apps and email clients that ignore the loop setting, you can also repeat the animation inside the file so it plays several times anyway.

GIF Loop Generator FAQ

How does GIF looping work?

A small NETSCAPE2.0 extension block stores how many times to repeat the animation. Without it, the GIF plays once; with 0, it loops forever.

Why does my GIF still loop only once in some apps?

Some apps and email clients ignore the loop setting. Repeating the animation inside the file makes it play several times regardless.

Does “play 3 times” mean 3 repeats?

It means three plays in total. The file stores two repeats after the first play, as the format specifies.

Is quality lost?

Changing the loop setting is lossless. Repeating the animation re-encodes it.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.

Loop settings in GIF files

Animated GIFs did not originally loop. In the 1990s, Netscape Navigator introduced an application extension, NETSCAPE2.0, that tells browsers how many times to repeat the animation. Today every browser supports it, and most GIFs online carry it with the value 0 – loop forever.

The loop generator edits that block directly in the file. If it exists, the repeat count is changed; if it is missing, a new block is inserted after the header; if you choose “play once”, the block is removed. Nothing else in the file changes, so the frames and file size remain the same.

One detail often causes confusion: the stored number counts repeats after the first play. To play a GIF three times, the file stores two. The generator does this conversion for you.

Some programs, notably some email clients, ignore the loop block and play every GIF once. For them, the animation itself can be repeated inside the file with FFmpeg, making it two, three or five times longer.
