Net Salary Calculator FAQ

What is an effective tax rate?

Your total income tax divided by your gross pay. It is lower than your top bracket because lower brackets apply to the first part of your income.

Where do I find my rates?

On a payslip or tax return, or from an official tax calculator for your country.

Why is the result an estimate?

Real tax depends on brackets, allowances and personal circumstances, which a flat rate cannot capture exactly.

Can I go the other way?

Yes – the Gross Salary Calculator works out the gross pay needed for a target net.

Gross versus net

Job offers quote gross pay, but rent and groceries are paid from net pay. The difference can be a third of the salary or more, so comparing offers by net pay is more meaningful – especially across countries.

Pension contributions reduce net pay today but are part of your total compensation.

This calculator does not contain the tax rules of any country, state or city. It applies the rates you enter, which keeps it useful everywhere but means you should confirm the right rates and any exemptions with the official tax authority or an accountant before relying on the figure.

Tax figures are a frequent source of errors in quotes and budgets. Keeping the net amount, the tax and the gross amount side by side, as this calculator does, makes it easy to check an invoice or a receipt line by line.
