PDF Annotation Remover FAQ
What is an annotation?
Anything placed on top of a page rather than in its content: comments, highlights, stamps, drawings, links, attachments, media and form field widgets.
What happens if I remove form fields?
The form becomes non-interactive and its values disappear from view. To keep values visible, flatten the form instead.
Will removing links change the text?
No. The text stays; it is just no longer clickable.
Can removed annotations be restored?
No. Keep the original file.
Does it remove things drawn into the page?
No. Watermarks or handwriting that are part of the page content are not annotations.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser.
Annotations in PDF files
PDF annotations are objects attached to a page: each has a type, a rectangle and usually an appearance. Reviewers add notes and highlights, workflows add stamps, authors add links and attachments, and forms use widget annotations for their fields. They are separate from the page content, which is why they can be removed cleanly.
The remover first reads the file structure with qpdf and counts the annotation types on every page, so you can see what the document carries before changing anything. Each type has a plain-language label, such as “Freehand drawings” for Ink or “Insert marks” for Caret.
Removal is done with pdf-lib: for every page, the list of annotations is filtered by the types you selected. Pop-up windows that belonged to removed comments are removed with them. Removing form field widgets also removes the document’s form definition, since nothing would be left to fill.
For comments only, the PDF Comments Remover offers a simpler choice; to keep the appearance but remove interactivity, use the PDF Flatten Tool.
Attachments deserve special attention: files embedded as annotations travel with the PDF and are easy to overlook. Removing the File attachments type deletes their annotations; files attached at document level are not annotations and are not affected.
