    Store Name Generator FAQ

Should a store name say what it sells?

For a new shop it helps a great deal: passers-by and searchers understand at once. If you may widen your range later, choose a broader second word such as Goods, Store or Co.

What is the difference between a store name and a brand?

They are often the same. If you sell your own products, the name is also your brand and should be distinctive enough to protect. If you sell other makers’ goods, clarity matters more.

How do I check that a name is free?

Search your business register and trademark database, search maps for shops with the same name nearby, and check the domain and the names on the marketplaces you plan to sell on.

Does the address badge mean the domain is available?

No. It only shows how the name would look as an address. Use the Domain Availability Checker to look up registration.

Is a place name a good idea?

A street or district name roots a shop in its neighbourhood and is easy to remember locally. It is less helpful if you plan to open elsewhere or sell mostly online.

Can I use the same name on marketplaces?

Usually, if nobody else has it. Marketplaces have their own shop-name rules and length limits, so check each before you decide.

What a shop sign has to say

A shop name is read at walking speed, or scrolling speed. In the second it takes to pass a sign or a search result, it has to say what is sold and whether the shop is for the person reading it. The names that do this best pair a distinctive word with a plain one.

The plain word places the shop. Boutique, market, bookshop, apothecary and outfitters each describe a kind of retail and a level of price. The distinctive word, a quality, a material, a place, the owner’s name, is what customers remember and repeat. “Northside Books” tells you everything; “Northside” alone tells you nothing, and “Books” alone is not a name.

Online shops face a tighter constraint, because the name should also work as an address and on marketplaces with their own limits. Shorter names without punctuation travel better. If the matching domain is held by another retailer, customers will end up there; it is worth adjusting the name until the address is available.

Whatever you choose, check before you print. A sign, bags and labels are expensive to redo. Search the business register and the trademark database, look for similar shop names in your area and on your marketplaces, and confirm the domain. A name that passes those checks and still feels right when you answer the phone with it is ready for the door.
