Video to MP4 FAQ
What is the difference between Fast and Compatible?
Fast copies the existing video into an MP4 container; nothing is re-encoded, so it is quick and lossless, but the video keeps its original codec. Compatible re-encodes to H.264 and AAC, which every device supports.
Why would Fast not work for my file?
Some older codecs used in AVI, WMV or FLV files cannot be stored in MP4. In that case the tool automatically converts the video instead.
Is MP4 better quality than other formats?
MP4 is a container, not a quality level. Quality depends on the codec and bitrate. Converting cannot add quality; the Compatible option aims to keep the picture visually the same.
How long does conversion take?
Fast remuxing takes seconds. Full conversion depends on length, resolution and your device; HD video may take about as long as its playing time or longer.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 500 MB are accepted. Very large or long videos may exceed the memory available to a browser tab, especially on phones.
Containers, codecs and why MP4 won
Every video file has two layers. The container, such as MP4, MKV, AVI or MOV, is the wrapper that holds video, audio and subtitles together with timing information. The codec, such as H.264, HEVC or VP9, is the method used to compress the pictures and sound inside. Many compatibility problems are really codec problems, which is why changing the file extension alone never works.
MP4 became the default format for sharing video because it pairs a standard container with H.264 video and AAC audio, a combination supported in hardware by virtually every phone, browser, television and editing program made in the past fifteen years. Older formats like WMV and FLV were tied to particular software platforms that are now obsolete.
Remuxing, the fast option, takes the compressed streams out of one container and puts them into another. Because nothing is decompressed, it is quick and lossless. It works when the existing codec is allowed in MP4, as with most MOV and MKV files that contain H.264 or HEVC.
When the codec is not suitable, the video must be decoded and encoded again. That is the slow part, but it produces a file that is guaranteed to play almost anywhere. Choosing the Balanced quality keeps the picture visually close to the original at a reasonable size.
