    TikTok Hashtag Generator FAQ

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?

Three to five. TikTok’s creator guidance recommends a small number of relevant hashtags. They share the caption’s character limit, and a wall of hashtags hides the caption.

Does #fyp get a video on the For You page?

There is no evidence for it, and TikTok has never said so. The For You feed is driven by how viewers respond to a video, by its content and by the viewer’s interests. #fyp is on billions of videos and distinguishes none of them.

    What are community hashtags?

Tags such as #BookTok, #FoodTok and #LearnOnTikTok name communities of viewers around a subject. People browse them directly, and they tell TikTok clearly which audience a video is for.

Can this tool show trending hashtags?

No. Trends change by the hour and by country, and only TikTok has that data. Check the Creative Center on TikTok’s website for current trending hashtags in your region, and use a trend only when your video really belongs to it.

Do hashtags help in TikTok search?

Yes. TikTok search uses captions, hashtags, on-screen text and spoken words. A hashtag with the phrase people search for makes a video more likely to appear for it.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the comments?

In the caption. TikTok categorises a video from its description at the time of posting; hashtags added in a comment are not treated the same way.

    What hashtags do on TikTok

TikTok decides whom to show a video to by testing it on a small audience and watching the response. To pick that first audience, it needs to know what the video is about. It works that out from the footage, the sound, the on-screen text, the caption and the hashtags. A hashtag is the most explicit of those clues: a label chosen by the creator.

Specific labels help the system and general ones do not. A video tagged with the exact subject, the technique and the community is easy to place in front of people who watch that subject. A video tagged with three versions of “for you” has provided no information, and uses up space that descriptive words could have filled.

Communities are a distinctive part of TikTok. Viewers gather around tags ending in “Tok”, and those tags behave almost like channels. Using the right one puts a video where interested viewers already are, and signals to the system the kind of viewer who is likely to watch to the end.

Trends are the third element. A trending hashtag can bring a burst of attention to a video that is truly part of the trend, with the sound and format viewers expect. Attached to an unrelated video it brings viewers who leave immediately, and early exits are the worst signal a video can send. Relevance, again, is the rule that makes every other choice work.
