Video to PNG

Turn a section of video into numbered PNG images without any further compression. Choose the range and frame rate, optionally reduce the size, and download a ready-made image sequence for editing, animation or frame-by-frame analysis.

How to use Video to PNG

  1. Drop a video onto the upload area.
  2. Select the part of the video on the timeline.
  3. Choose how many frames per second to export, or every frame, and an optional maximum height.
  4. Select Export PNG frames and download the sequence as a ZIP file.

Video to PNG features

Lossless PNG output

Each decoded frame is saved without additional compression artefacts, ideal for further editing.

Frame rate choice

1, 5 or 10 frames per second, or every frame of the original.

Numbered sequence

Files are numbered frame_0001, frame_0002 and so on, the format editing and animation software expects.

Optional downscaling

Limit the height to 1080, 720 or 480 pixels to save space.

Estimate before export

See how many images the selection will produce.

Runs locally

FFmpeg processes the video in your browser.

When to use Video to PNG

  • Rotoscoping and frame-by-frame retouching in image editors.
  • Building sprite sheets or flipbook animations from video.
  • Analysing motion in sports, science or engineering footage.
  • Preparing training images for computer vision projects.
  • Importing image sequences into compositing and animation software.

Video to PNG FAQ

Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG is lossless, so frames are saved exactly as decoded, with no extra blur or blocking. That matters when frames will be edited further. The trade-off is larger files.

Will PNG frames be better quality than the video?

No. They are exact copies of the decoded frames, including any compression artefacts already in the video. PNG simply avoids adding more.

How many frames can I export at once?

Up to 300 per export. For longer sequences, export the video in several ranges.

How does “Every frame” work?

Every frame in the selected range is exported at the video’s own frame rate. The estimate assumes 30 frames per second because browsers do not report the exact rate.

How is this different from Extract Frames from Video?

Extract Frames picks frames automatically across the whole video, at intervals or at scene changes, and saves JPGs for previews. Video to PNG exports a continuous, lossless sequence from a chosen range.

Image sequences in video production

An image sequence is a video stored as individual numbered pictures. Visual effects, animation and colour grading pipelines use them because every frame is independent: a single frame can be fixed without re-rendering the whole clip, files can be shared between programs, and a crash never corrupts more than one frame.

Lossless formats are essential for this work. Every time a frame is saved as JPG, compression removes detail and can introduce blocky artefacts around edges, which compound when images are edited and re-saved. PNG stores the pixels exactly, so any number of edits starts from the same clean data.

Choosing the frame rate keeps the export practical. Analysing a movement or creating a flipbook rarely needs every frame; 5 or 10 frames per second are often enough and produce far fewer files. Export every frame when smooth playback or precise motion tracking is required.

Image sequences are large. One minute of 1080p video at 30 frames per second is 1,800 PNG files that may total several gigabytes, which is why exports here are limited to manageable ranges.
