WAV to MP3 FAQ

Will MP3 sound as good as WAV?

At 192 kbps and above, most listeners cannot tell the difference on most music. MP3 removes sounds you are unlikely to hear; WAV keeps everything. Keep the WAV if you will edit the audio again.

Which bitrate should I choose?

320 kbps for the best quality, 192 kbps for a good balance, 128 kbps for small music files, 64 kbps for speech.

Why are WAV files so large?

WAV usually stores uncompressed PCM audio: every sample is recorded in full, 44,100 or 48,000 times per second per channel.

Can I convert 24-bit or 32-bit WAV files?

Yes. High-resolution WAV files are converted correctly; MP3 itself does not have a bit depth.

Is there a file size limit?

Up to 300 MB per file, which is about half an hour of CD-quality stereo audio.

From uncompressed WAV to compressed MP3

WAV is a container developed by Microsoft and IBM that most often holds plain PCM audio, the same uncompressed format used on audio CDs. Every sample is stored exactly, which makes WAV ideal for recording and editing but impractical for sharing: a three-minute song takes over 30 MB.

MP3 shrinks audio by modelling human hearing. It analyses short slices of sound, works out which frequencies are masked by louder neighbouring ones, and spends fewer bits on what you cannot hear. The bitrate controls how much data the encoder may use per second, and therefore the balance between size and fidelity.

The right time to convert is at the end of a workflow. Edit, mix and master in WAV, then export to MP3 for listening and sharing. Converting an MP3 back to WAV does not restore what was discarded, so keep the original WAV files for future edits.

Speech has a narrower frequency range than music and is usually recorded with one microphone, so a 64 kbps mono MP3 is perfectly clear for interviews, lectures and podcasts while being tiny.
