YouTube Video Info Extractor FAQ
Where does the information come from?
From YouTube itself, through two documented interfaces. oEmbed returns the title, channel and thumbnail of any public, embeddable video. The YouTube Data API returns statistics, tags, description and more, and needs an API key that the site owner sets up. The page tells you which of the two was used.
Why are views and tags missing?
Because the Data API is not configured on this installation, or YouTube’s daily quota for the site is used up. The basic details still work.
Why does it say the video is private or unavailable?
YouTube shares details only for public videos that allow embedding. Private videos, deleted videos and some age-restricted or region-locked videos are refused. The tool does not work around that.
Why is the like count hidden?
The owner of a video can hide its like count, and YouTube then leaves it out of the data. Dislike counts have not been public since 2021.
Can this download the video?
No. Downloading video or audio from YouTube is not permitted by its terms of service, except through YouTube’s own download features. This tool shows information only.
What is the video ID?
The 11-character code that identifies a video, such as the part after “v=” in a watch link. Every form of link to the same video contains the same ID.
What YouTube publishes about a video
Every YouTube video has an 11-character identifier, and almost everything else hangs from it. The watch page, the short youtu.be link, the embed address and the thumbnail images are all built from that ID. Knowing it is enough to construct any of them, which is why it is the first thing this tool extracts.
For the facts about a video, YouTube provides official channels with different depth. The lightest is oEmbed, an open standard that lets one site ask another how to embed a piece of content. Given a video address, YouTube answers with the title, the channel name and a thumbnail. It needs no account or key, and it answers only for videos that are public and embeddable.
The fuller source is the YouTube Data API. With an API key, an application can request a video’s snippet (title, description, tags, publication date), its content details (length, definition, whether captions exist) and its statistics (views, likes, comments). Use is metered by a daily quota per project, so a site can run out during a busy day. Some things are not available to third parties at all, including the caption text of other people’s videos and any private analytics.
Thumbnails are the simplest part. YouTube stores several sizes of each thumbnail at predictable addresses under i.ytimg.com. The 1280-pixel version exists only when the video was uploaded in high definition; the smaller sizes always exist. The addresses listed here can be opened directly, or passed to the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader to save the image.
